Bio

Hassan Halawa is a Ph.D. Student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program, and a member of the Networked Systems Laboratory, at the University of British Columbia (UBC). At a high level, his research involves applying big data analytics and machine learning to improve the security of large online systems (e.g., email, and online social networks) in the face of large-scale automated cyber attacks (e.g., phishing attacks, and malware downloads). His research puts forward the idea of identifying vulnerable user populations and, based on this information, creating additional layers of defense that will help limit the spread, and cost, of large-scale cyber-attacks. Hassan is a member of UBC's Public Scholars Initiative (PSI).
