ECE Professor elected to US National Academy of Engineering

Rabab Ward, a professor emeritus in UBC’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected a Foreign Member of the United States’ National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for her “innovative applications of signal processing to industrial and bioengineering problems.”

ECE Professor Dr. Ali Mesbah received the 2019 UBC Killam Research Prize in the Junior Category, which recognizes outstanding research and scholarly contributions.

James McEwen Inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame

James McEwen, a UBC alumnus and adjunct professor in UBC’s Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Medicine, has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) for his invention of the automatic surgical tourniquet, a medical device that has significantly improved surgical safety, quality and efficiency around the world.

ECE & Faculty of Medicine Profs to Partner in Supercluster’s Projects

Dr. Purang Abolmaesumi (ECE), Dr. Robert Rohling (ECE), Dr. Teresa Tsang (Faculty of Medicine), and Dr. Lukas Chrostowski (ECE).   On January 16, 2020 the Digital Technology Supercluster announced 14 new projects with a total investment of $25 million; eight focused on talent development for the digital economy, six in technology.

Pushing the Envelope of Underwater Acoustic Signal Reliability

ECE Professor Lutz Lampe, along with his MASc Student Lazar Atanackovic have been working towards securing marine infrastructure through the reliability of underwater communications via acoustic signaling. The purpose is to be able to detect, identify and localize various threats underwater. This could be for military or civilian environments, such as submerged mines, oil rigs or simply to detect scuba divers.

Purang Abolmaesumi selected as Wall Scholar 2020-2021!

Congratulations to Professor Purang Abolmaesumi for being selected as Peter Wall Institute Wall Scholars for the 2020-2021 academic year. Prof. Abolmaesumi’s plan during his term as a Peter Wall Scholar is to “engage a transdisciplinary group of scholars to seek breakthrough innovations in AI research and applications. Some of the key questions include transparency, accountability, fairness, ethics, privacy and important considerations for inclusion and diversity in the context of next-generation AI solutions for widespread adoption”.

Prof L. Chrostowski Elected to Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

  UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Lukas Chrostowski has been named a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, Canada’s “first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership.”

Sathish Gopalakrishnan receives Killam Teaching Prize

Congratulations to Professor Sathish Gopalakrishnan for receiving the 2018/2019 Killam Teaching Prize! He will be receiving his prize at this spring’s graduation ceremony on May 29. “Sathish’s contributions to our educational mission have been exemplary, both inside and outside the classroom,” says Steve Wilton, Department Head of ECE.
