University: The University of British Columbia Department: Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering Professor: Victor C.M. Leung Traffic Control and Multimedia Coding for High Speed Internet Access over Wireless Networks This investigation spans two funded multi-year projects on traffic control
techniques to enable quality of service support over the General Packet
Radio Service (GPRS) and over broadband satellites for Internet access.
We are developing novel service scheduling, traffic shaping and connection
admission control methods to provide quality of service support for different
service classes in GPRS. This work will be extended to include new service
classes for real-time applications in future IMT2000/UMTS. The techniques
will also be applied to the IETF Integrated Service (RFC2215) and Differentiated
Service (RFC2475), using protocols such as RSVP (RFC2205) and RTP (RFC1889).
Other subjects of investigation includes enhancement of TCP over satellite,
and development of efficient IP multicasting techniques for wireless networks.
Our techniques will be evaluated using realistic multimedia traffic generated
using such ITU standards as H.323 and H.263. Results will facilitate the
ongoing research on multimedia encoding/decoding and signal processing
techniques. Work is in progress to enhance the robustness, error resilience
and scalability of these techniques for multimedia communications over
the Internet.
