Potential Graduate Students working with Steve Wilton:
Grad students in this group work hard, but produce excellent results. Our
results are consistently published in leading international conferences and
journals,
and we have won numerous best paper awards.
If you are interested in joining the group, there are a
few things you need (these are specifically for my research groups; other
research groups in the department will have other requirements):
- Demonstratable experience writing, testing, and maintaining large
complex pieces of software. For UBC Undergrads, this requirement can
be satisfied with a first-class mark in the Software Engineering Project.
This is because a lot of our time is spent either writing or modifying
CAD tools, or modeling FPGA architectures.
- Familiarity with VLSI Design Techniques. For UBC Undergrads, this
requirement can be satisfied with a first-class mark in EECE 479
and either EECE 481 or EECE 488.
For students from elsewhere, you must have
received good marks in a senior (4th year) course on VLSI Design.
No experience with any particular tool suite is required.
- Good Technical Writing Skills: For UBC Undergrads, this requirement
can be satisfied with good marks in each English course taken,
or can be satisfied by submitting a sample of your writing.
This is an important requirement; an important part of research is
writing up the results in papers or in your thesis.
- Any other requirements set forth by the department (look
here ).
- FOR PHD APPLICANTS ONLY: To register in the PhD program, you need
previous research experience. With your application, submit a list of
papers, presentations, or research topics studied. If you do not have
any formal research experience, you should consider registering in the
MASc program.
NOTE: UNSOLICITED EMAILS FROM THOSE WITHOUT
NSERC SCHOLARSHIP THAT DO NOT EXPLICITLY ADDRESS
EACH OF THE ABOVE POINTS, WILL NOT MAKE IT TO MY MAILBOX
AND THUS WILL NOT BE ANSWERED.
