An update

April 18, 2003

Another slight change. It is now HTML 4.01 and CSS 2.0 compliant, or should be (let me know if you find a page that isn't). In addition, there has been an update, the buttons and menus stay put while you scroll and read (provided your browser supports CSS 2.0). Moreover, it still looks fine on old HTML 3.2 browsers! Yeah!

At long last, an update to the Engineering pages. It's been done to match my other pages. We'll see if we can keep this updated.

Some of the information is duplicated between sites, but well, who can deal with 3 separate sites?

Avro Arrow

About the picture

Click on the picture to get a bigger version. This is a photograph of the Avro Arrow (CF-105). This was a great Canadian achievement. At the time (late 1950's), it was the most advanced fighter jet on the planet. (And it worked on the first flight)! That's right, the best in the world. It even had fly-by-wire, something which is now on the latest CF-18 and F-16 fighter jets. Not only was it a great airframe, did you know we also designed & produced the Orenda Iroquois engines which powered this thing? Also, at the time, the best in the world, by far! Even without the superior engine, the Arrow met design requirements with a substantially less powerful engine from American manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. Unfortunately, the politicians got in the act and axed the program, and worse, ordered all existing planes, engines and blueprints destroyed! Most of the brilliant Canadian engineers then headed off to NASA, where their expertise helped in the Apollo program to send a man to the moon.

Latest Rant: Zip it!

Well, here's my personal rant of the week/month/day/whatever. I've a personal compaign to get people to stop using whatever compression format they are using and go with ZIP. I have to admit, this is mostly pointed at the UNIX/Linux crowd and maybe a little bit at the Mac guys as well.

Why? (more...)
