Zahra Ahmadian: 2011 Google Anita Borg Scholar

Subject:  Scholarships Congratulations to Zahra Ahmadian, a PhD candidate working with Dr. Lampe, who recently received the Google Anita Borg Scholarship. Through this scholarship, Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders. Anita Borg believed that technology affects all aspects of our economic, political, social and personal lives. Dr. Anita Borg devoted her life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields.

Project Fair Runner Up Design

Subject:  Smart Parking   Runners up at the EECE 375/474 Project Fair, Group 6, designed technology for a smart parking lot. Here are group members Zetong Zhang, Kevin Leu, Jacky Cheung, Usman Muhammad and Justin Bisal talk about their project: “This project is a prototype of a smart parking system. Our final product is the combination of Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The motive behind this project is to efficiently control and monitor any type of parking lots, thus reducing the time required to find parking.

UBC IEEE Student Branch Awarded

Congratulations to the UBC IEEE Student Branch for receiving the George Armitage Outstanding Student Branch Award in recognition of their extraordinary achievements. This award will be presented at the IEEE Canada Annual Student Congress in Mississauga, ON to be held Sept 16-18, 2011. EECE 375/474 Project Fair Winners

Thank you to everyone who made it out on Friday August 6th for the EECE 375/474 Project Fair. The day was a success with great projects and presentations given by all groups. A special thank you to the judges, Purang Abolmaesumi, Parham Yaghoobi and Jamil Karim, who had the difficult task of selecting winners. ECE Team Receives Best Paper Award at Premier Conference in Usable Security

Congratulations to ECE doctoral candidate Pooya Jaferian, first coauthor of "Heuristics for Evaluating IT Security Management Tools," and his co-authors at LERSSE and CA Technologies. This paper was selected as the Best Paper at the Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS), the premier research venue in usable security.

Graduate Students Awarded Scholarships

Congratulations to Electrical and Computer Engineering students Mohamed Sultan Mohamed Ali and Jonas Flueckiger who are among the first recipients of the ICICS Graduate Scholarship. The $5000 scholarship recognizes ICICS-affiliated graduate students who are excelling in their studies and whose work aligns with the ICICS mandate to promote multidisciplinary research its members and students, and with industry. Congratulations to all the recipients.

UBC Engineering Students Awarded at AUTO21 Conference

Congratulations to UBC Engineering students who won two awards at the AUTO21 Scientific Conference held in Ottawa May 25 - 27, 2011. Two posters were submitted and competed against over 50 others being judged on six different themes.

Reflex Wireless

  Reflex Wireless, the winner of the NYC Big Idea competition earlier this year, is off to Toronto, Ontario this weekend to showcase their design at e-Health 2011. The conference will showcase healthcare services, equipment and products to general public and industry professionals.
