Professor Robert Schober Nominated for Canadian Academy of Engineering

Congratulations to Professor Robert Schober for being nominated into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) includes many of the country’s most accomplished engineers, who have expressed their dedication to the application of science and engineering principles in the interests of the country and its enterprises. Members of the Academy are nominated and elected by their peers to honorary Fellowships, in view of their achievements and career-long service to the profession.

Dr. Boris Stoeber Receives NSERC DAS Grant

Professor Boris Stoeber has been awarded the NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement Grant, a $120,000 award distributed over three years.

ECE Lutz Lampe wins Best Paper Award at 2011 IEEE ISPLC

Professor Lutz Lampe has won the Best Paper Award at the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications (ISPLC), which was held in Udine, Italy, April 3-6, 2011. His paper "Bursty Impulse Noise Detection by Comressed Sensing" was selected by an Awards Committee as the top paper of this conference.

ECE Vikram Krishnamurthy wins UBC Killam Research Prize

Congratulations to Professor Vikram Krishnamurthy for being awarded a 2010 UBC Killam Research Prize. Established in 1986, the UBC Killam Research Prizes are awarded annually to top campus researchers. Up to ten prizes in the amount of $5,000 each are awarded to fulltime faculty members in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions.

Professor Guy Dumont Receives NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize

UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Guy Dumont and Mark Ansermino, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, have received the NSERC Brockhouse Canada prize. The prize recognizes Canadian interdisciplinary research teams who have combined their expertise to produce achievements of outstanding international significance in the natural sciences and engineering. A $250,000 research grant accompanies the prize.

Professor David Michelson Plays Key Role in Successful Wavefront Wireless Innovation Society of British Columbia Application.

The federal government has awarded $11.6-million to the Wavefront Wireless Innovation Society of British Columbia as one of the winners of the 2010 competition for National Centres of Excellence - Centres for Commercialization and Research (CECR). Of the seventeen CECRs funded since 2007, Wavefront is the first one that is devoted to wireless technology. Professor Dave Michelson, from our own Department of ECE, led UBC's efforts to support Wavefront's application.

Dr. Abolmaesumi Receives Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Engineering

Congratulations to Professor Purang Abolmaesumi, who received the Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Engineering. He uses real-time ultrasound imaging to diagnose prostate cancer and to monitor patients during treatment. His research could lead to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Professor participates in program to design support for exa-scale computing applications

Prof. Matei Ripeanu together with Mike Wilde (Mathematics and Computer Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory) and Dan Katz (Computation Institute, The University of Chicago) have received major funding from the U.S. Department of Energy ($2,000,000 for the 2010-2013 period).

Vijay Bhargava given IEEE outstanding educator award

Professor Vijay Bhargava has been awarded the 2010 IEEE Canada Outstanding Educator Award "for exemplary teaching, curriculum development and lifelong dedication to students". The award will be presented on 03 May 2010 at Calgary's TELUS Convention Centre during the banquet of the Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering.

David Pulfrey’s outstanding academic record spans four decades of accomplishments at the University of British Columbia as a teacher, mentor and leader. A professor of electrical engineering, Dr. Pulfrey’s dedication, knowledge and inspiration encourages students to strive for mastery in the field of engineering. He has been at the core of successful eff orts to update, revise and streamline the department curriculum to ensure its relevance for today’s students.
