IEEE Vancouver Section Centennial Awards

Subject:  Awards On its 100th Birthday, IEEE Vancouver Section honoured its most influential contributors. Centennial awards distinguished members who have been influential in the development of Canadian technology, keeping the Vancouver Section or the IEEE vibrant and flourishing. The contributions of four Professors with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering were acknowledged.

First Prize Paper Award: IEEE Industrial Applications Society

Fariborz Musavi, Wilson Eberle and William G. Dunford won the First Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Industrial Applications Society Industrial Power Conversion Committee for their paper: A High-Performance Single-Phase Bridgeless Interleaved PFC Converter for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Battery Chargers.

Professor Peter Lawrence shares secrets to success upon retirement

“Collaboration is fundamental to success,” says Professor Peter Lawrence proudly. After 37 years in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Lawrence counts faculty from 10 different UBC departments, numerous industry collaborators and thousands of students — both undergrad and graduate — as essential to his success. Driven by his interest in improving the human condition, Lawrence focused his research on the interface — the collaboration, if you will — between humans and machines.

ECE Team Receives Best Paper Award at Premier Conference in Usable Security

Congratulations to ECE doctoral candidate Pooya Jaferian, first coauthor of "Heuristics for Evaluating IT Security Management Tools," and his co-authors at LERSSE and CA Technologies. This paper was selected as the Best Paper at the Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS), the premier research venue in usable security.

Professor Vijay Bhargava Winner of the 2011 ACCS-CDAC Foundation Award

Professor Vijay Bhargava was announced the winner of the Advanced Computing and Communications Society – Center for Development of Advanced Computing Foundation (ACCS-CDAC) Award for 2011. The ACCS-CDAC Award, instituted in 2004, is presented to those whose outstanding contributions in computing and communications have had significant and demonstrable effects. Vijay Bhargava was awarded this year for the influence he has had on the growth of communications technologies.

Professor Dave Michelson Joins Board of Directors at Wavefront

Congratulations to Professor Dave Michelson on his election as the Chair of the Wavefront Wireless Commercialization Centre's Academic Advisory Board and to a seat on Wavefront's Board of Directors. During his two-year term, Prof. Michelson and his team will help Wavefront develop and execute a strategy for helping universities connect with the wireless industry and commercialize innovative wireless technology developed by their faculty and students.

Professor Tim Salcudean Co-Investigator on CIHR Grant

Congratulation to Professor Tim Salcudean who along with Principal Investigator Dr. Piotr Kozlowski of UBC and fellow co-investigators Dr. Silvia Chang, Dr. Larry Goldenberg, Dr. Edward Jones and Dr. Mehdi Moradi on being a awarded a CIHR Operating Grant. Their project titled “Multi-parametric MRI for prostate cancer diagnosis and prognosis” will receive a $627,332 contribution over the next 5 years. Congratulations to all involved.

Associate Professor Purang Abolmaesumi Awarded CIHR Grant

Congratulations to Professor Purang Abolmaesumi on being awarded the CIHR Operating Grant for a research project titled "Needle Guidance System for Neuraxial Analgesia and Anesthesia". Along with co-investigators, Dr. Robert Rohling, Dr. Sugantha Ganapathy, Dr. Allaudin Kamani, Dr. Jill Osborn and Dr. Terence Peters, Professor Abolmaesumi will receive the $449,395 grant over the next four years. Congratulations on your successes.

Tektronix is a leading supplier of test, measurement, and monitoring products and solutions for engineers, with customers’ worldwide.  Today, the company announced the acquisition of Veridae Systems Inc., previously, a privately held company founded to commercialize research from Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia.

'Cooperative Cellular Wireless Communications' Published

  Congratulations to Professor Vijay Bhargava on the publication of the book ‘Cooperative Cellular Wireless Communications’ by Cambridge University Press. Bhargava is a co-editor along with Professor Ekram Hossain from the University of Manitoba and Professor Dong In Kim from the Sungkyunkwan University of Korea.  More information on publication is available here.
