In the ECE department, admission is considered separately from financial support. Financial assistance is available for some students.It is up to the student to ensure that sufficient funds are available to undertake his/her graduate program. The Department has a very strong research focus and ranks number one amongst ECE departments in Canada in NSERC research funding per professor. Students should contact potential supervisors for research assistant funding.
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada provides scholarships to celebrate extraordinary research from outstanding candidates. Prizes can vary from The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering to the Synergy Awards for Innovation. We urge all Canadians and Permanent Residents with First Class grades to apply for the 2010/11 NSERC scholarship competition. Please check with the ECE department for deadline information. The ECE department is pleased to offer Graduate Student Initiative (GSI) funding available to all MASc and PhD students to apply for during the Affiliated Fellowship Competition. ECE is phasing out the tricouncil topups program in the 2011-12 academic year. ECE will offer a small number of awards in 2011-12 based on academic merit to the top ranked candidates in the Affiliated Fellowship Competition. Awards will be for a single year but students may apply each of their first four years of study in the PhD program. As the NSERC Topup program is phased out we will offer a greater number of scholarships. We will provide further details about the total number of awards and their value as we determine what funds will be available.
The ECE department is pleased to offer a number of Four Year Fellowships to outstanding selected Ph.D. applicants. This fellowship consists of an annual stipend of $16,000 plus full tuition for 4 years. In addition, the nominating supervisor will offer a minimum top-up award of $4,000 to FYF award holders for a total award package of $20,000 plus full tuition. Applicants will be nominated by accepting supervisors. The award is open to both international and domestic Ph.D. applicants.
If you are presenting a paper or poster at a conference and your supervisor has agreed to fund your trip, please consult the EECE financial policies and procedures section of our intranet site as well as to obtain the necessary forms to complete.

ECE offers teaching assistant positions for our undergraduate courses. Most teaching assistant job cover a variety of job including marking, delivering tutorials, supervising undergraduate labs, and conducting office hours. Teaching assistant positions are highly competitive as there are typically many more applicants than available positions. Most jobs vary between 40 to 65 hours per term. Be advised that Teaching Assistants at The University of British Columbia (UBC) are represented by the Canadian Union Of Public Employees Local 2278 (CUPE2278) and that a Collective Agreement between UBC and CUPE2278 is in effect. This highly sought after Scholarship awards $50,000 per year for three years to incredibly adept Doctoral students who are pursuing their studies in a Canadian university. Vanier Scholarships are based on proven leadership aptitude and an incredibly high standard of accomplishment in academics. This award is open to both Canadian and International students.
Trudeau scholarships are offered to students who show amazing work which addresses one of four themes; Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada in the World and People in their Natural Environment. Applicants must meet a rather stringent set of requirements and must demonstrate proven involvement in various endeavours.
